In Cambodia, recent clashes with Thailand have displaced over 500,000 people. Strained relations between Washington and Phnom Penh, reduced international funding, and the return of hundreds of thousands of migrants are severely overloading local hospital resources. As household incomes drop sharply, the most vulnerable populations are forced to forgo medical care or fall into debt to afford treatment.
In this context, La Petite Etoile Foundation is helping equip the Thmar Puok Hospital in Banteay Meanchay Province with medical devices. In the post-Khmer Rouge era, this facility was known for playing a critical role in providing care to landmine victims.
Today, the hospital operates a maternity unit handling 50 births per month, equipped with 10 mother-child beds, alongside a 25-bed pediatric ward. It faces critical needs for essential neonatal and pediatric equipment. The project aims to improve the care of newborns as well as hospitalized children and outpatients.
Even today, 13,500 children die every year in the country, including 4,500 from malnutrition.
The project also aims to train all maternity and pediatric healthcare staff on the use of this equipment. Training courses include practical and theoretical workshops featuring clinical simulations, equipment operation, joint consultations, and rounds for hospitalized newborns.
Total 4-year budget (16 missions): € 24,080
Location: Thmar Puok Hospital
Co-funding partners / Co-participants: La Petite Etoile Foundation, Pediatres du Monde, Gratitude Foundation, La Guilde Agence des Micro-projets (AFD)
Contribution from La Petite Etoile Foundation: € 6,000
