Funding vacations for children
Funding vacations for disabled children
A child in hospital with a serious condition has to deal with a lack of freedom and disempowerment.
And if the hospital feels like a prison, holidays are often considered as another injustice.
However, many disabled or sick children are unable to go on holiday with their parents or in common recreational centers.
And yet, moving these children away from the hospital and from their isolation is highly beneficial for them.
Providing these children with leisure time allows them to forget for a while the trauma of their condition or disability. If, thanks to appropriate medical supervision, there are some vacation sites entirely dedicated to children with disabling pathologies, there are also ordinary vacation sites where sick children can spend time with healthy children, through appropriate structures.
During this period, kids benefit from dedicated activities, generating greater autonomy on their part ( away from their family and the hospital), more confidence and awareness of their capacity to succeed ( through activities where competition is not entirely absent), enhanced interpersonal skills (through the presence of healthy children) and extra motivation and strength to fight the disease (through the retention of joyful memories).
The participating children benefit from a break by sharing a festive universe where confronting other children and feeling part of a group will provide them with new resources to fight their illnesses.
In addition, there are several other vacation programs where sick children spend time with their families (ascendants or siblings).
Family ties that have been weakened by the hospital environment are then strengthened through a temporary " escape " from the daily routine.
A shift in perception of sick children by healthy children as well as a change in perception of sick children by their parents can also be observed.
The perception of serious illness and disability is evolving in the right direction with a better understanding of the difference.
